The Negaunee Irontown Association Community Service Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 1996 by the Negaunee Irontown Association Board of Directors to salute young people who have displayed commitment to the area through community service.

Application


Recipients must meet the following criteria:

    Senior at Negaunee High School who plans to attend a college or university.

bullet

    Student who has displayed a commitment to community service through volunteer efforts.

Applicants should submit a letter to the Irontown Association by May 1 of each year outlining their community service and educational goals. Application must include at least two letters of support from teachers, clergy, administrators or others who have been involved with–and directly observed--the student’s volunteer efforts. Letters should be addressed to:

2009 Scholarship Recipients

The Negaunee Irontown association named three scholarship winners for the 2009 application period.

The Sydney Northey scholarship was awarded to Helen Collins.

bullet

Two regular community service scholarships were awarded to Lucas LaFreniere and Shawn Peterson.

 

2008 Scholarship Recipients

The Negaunee Irontown association named three scholarship winners for the 2008 application period.
The Sydney Northey scholarship was awarded to Jordan Sedlacek. Jordan plans to attend Ferris State University in the fall to study pharmacy.
Two regular community service scholarships were awarded to Christopher Parkkonen and Lisa Herman.
Parkkonen plans to attend NMU in the fall in the computer numerical control technician certificate program.
Herman plans to attend NMU or Central Michigan University in the fall. She wants to get a degree in education.

2007 Scholarship Recipients

bulletJudith Ann Paul is the recipient of the Sydney Northey Scholarship. Judith is very active in her church youth group, working on habitat for humanity homes, and several dinners and banquettes. She was part of the Youth Advisory Committee and organized and co-lead a weekly Bible Study at the high school. She is a member of the National Honor Society, performing over 40 hours of community service.  She also plays cello with the NHS orchestra.
After graduation, Judith plans on attending Bethel University to major in Biomedical Engineering.
bulletJennifer Lynn Torreano—Jennifer has dedicated much of her time to community and global issues.  She has served as co-chair of the Recycling Committee, AIDS Awareness and the Hunger Awareness Committee.  She is a certified open water scuba diver, co-captain of the forensics team, activities editor for the yearbook, member of the ACTion Troup and treasurer of the National Honor Society.Jennifer plans on attending Grand Valley State University, majoring in English education and hopes to become a secondary English teacher.
bulletRachael May Grossman–Rachel has served as co-chair of the Recycling Committee helped coordinate a World AIDS awareness project  and was co-chair for the World Hunger Awareness Dinner, which raised over $5000.  She has volunteered over 200 hours in community service this year.  Rachel enjoys cooking, yoga, pilates and traveling.  After graduation she plans on attending the California School of Culinary Arts program and hopes to someday own her own business.
